Subject: Glowing Green Orb above New York City

This week on the night of 9/16/97, I was walking home from the grocery store with my wife. It was a beautiful warm evening here in New York City and the sky had not yet turned fully black (it was exactly 9:12 PM). As we approached the corner of West 23rd Street and 7th Avenue, I noticed ahead and above, a 747 banking slowly across New York's West side. The reason we noticed this airplane was because it was flying *very* low- appearing very large in the sky with all of it's (Landing?) lights on. I wasn't sure if the 747 was in trouble (It looked like it was not) but we both found it very peculiar that a plane of that size would be so close (and so low) to the city's buildings. This is common with helicopters here but not large aircraft. And part of the reason we watched was because it seemed dangerous.

Looking northwest we stopped at the corner of 23rd Street and Seventh avenue and watched the plane slowly cross the city and bank slightly to the southeast. It was at this time that out of the corner of our eyes directly to our right (Northeast) we spotted a large green object passing over the city.

This object appeared to be oval shaped. It was flying higher than the 747 and was moving at an incredible rate of speed. We could not determine the altitude but the object looked large- about the size of a quarter held at arms distance. It was obvious this object was flying higher than the 747 but not *that* much higher because we lost track of it when it passed behind some buildings.

This object was "roundish" with a white center and a glowing green oval shaped halo around it. It had a bright white tail roughly twice the length of the oval that "sparkled" making it look like a "Tadpole".

There is no way I can say for certain it was an intelligently controlled craft. I tend to think it was some sort of natural phenomenon. But who knows? It was moving directly from the south to the north. It was *not* falling . The strangest thing about it (besides it's velocity) was that it was a bright glowing neon green color.

My question to anyone out there is: What was it? Do comets asteroids or meteors glow this color green when they enter the atmosphere?
