Spring Meadow Lake is a state park within 5 minutes of home. As much time as I’ve spent there walking the dogs and with SAR, I had never fished it before. It is reputed to have both trout and bass. Being 90+ feet deep in the center, it’s bound to have several different thermoclines.

An approaching storm, one of a couple early fall (winter?) squalls, brought wind and clouds this day. It seemed like a great day to out this water closest to home for the first time.
A few fish were rising over the couple of hours that I fished. There was no apparent hatch and I tried everything from streamers to nymphs to dry flies. Toward dark, the fish became more active and I got several strikes on a #8 grasshopper (“Hawk hopper”, as the family calls my gawdawful creation). One pretty little rainbow volunteered to pose for pictures before being returned to the little lake.
