Finding open water is always a challenge during Montana’s rivers. The options are a) tail waters, and b) a couple of spring creeks that don’t freeze. Poindexter Slough is inhabited by some pretty selective trout. When they’re torpid, they just seem a bit more selective. A break in the weather and temperatures a bit above freezing opened the opportunity. Not surprisingly, I wasn’t the only one there. I’ve seen summer days less busy!

There was no sign of moss typically heavy in the summer to be seen. Remnants of beaver activity was everywhere, including in the deeper holes. The water was cold and crystal clear.
Amazingly, a few trout got excited about emergers and small nymphs. I didn’t manage to land any of a number hooked, but enjoyed the excitement this winter day nonetheless.
