Following a successful, if unproductive, trip to Poindexter Slough and an equally enjoyable 50th birthday party for a friend in Dillon, I headed to the upper Beaverhead for evening fishing with the new Phillipson Powr Pakt. With Montana’s Biggest Weekend in full swing at the fairgrounds, it was a good time to find a bit of solitude on the river.

If the Beaverhead looked high near Dillon, it looked positively full below the dam. I can’t say I’ve seen it this high, this late in the season. The Bureau of Reclamation must be dumping water from the reservoir in preparation for next spring. The water was clear, though, and the typical late-season moss wasn’t bad at all.

As earlier in the day at Poindexter Slough, the fish didn’t disturb my casting. The Phillipson was a positive joy. It has plenty of power, loads easily, and feels smooth as only good cane can. It got little workout before the day faded. I’d be back before the less than 12 hours later.
